Minimum Export Price for Natural Honey Extended

TaxIntelHub · 11 April 2026 · Last updated 12 Apr 2026

The Indian government has extended the minimum export price (MEP) for natural honey to ensure fair returns for beekeepers and prevent the export of low-quality honey.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has extended the minimum export price (MEP) of ₹200 per kilogram on natural honey. This extension aims to prevent the export of cheap or adulterated honey, ensuring that Indian honey exports maintain a certain standard of quality and fetch reasonable prices in the international market. The MEP was initially introduced to protect the interests of Indian beekeepers and promote the export of high-quality natural honey. By setting a floor price, the government aims to prevent exporters from undercutting each other and compromising on quality to gain market share. This measure directly impacts exporters of natural honey, who must ensure their export price is at or above the stipulated MEP. Small businesses involved in honey production and export should be aware of this requirement to avoid potential disruptions to their export activities. Stakeholders should closely monitor any further notifications or circulars issued by the DGFT regarding honey exports.

This measure is implemented under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, empowering the DGFT to regulate exports and set minimum export prices. Non-compliance can lead to penalties, including seizure of goods and cancellation of export licenses. Exporters need to comply with the Customs Act, 1962, when exporting goods.

While the MEP aims to protect beekeepers, it could also limit the competitiveness of Indian honey in the global market if international prices are lower. Close monitoring of market trends and adaptive strategies are crucial for exporters to remain competitive while adhering to the MEP regulations.

The minimum export price for natural honey remains at ₹200 per kilogram, ensuring quality and fair prices for Indian exporters.
